Importance and Facts of the Month of Safar

In the Islamic calendar, we have twelve months; it starts with the month of Muharram and ends with Dhul Hijjah. At some specific months we, as Muslims, obviate ourselves from what our beloved prophet (peace be upon him) had prohibited us to do. These months are: Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qi’dah and Dhul Hijjah. Allah the All-Mighty says:
“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar.). That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein, and fight against the Mushrikun (Polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) collectively as they fight against you collectively. But know that Allah is with those who are Al Muttaqun (the pious).” (Quran, Surah 9, Verse: 36)
Yet unfortunately, and as it happens always when people follow the sayings of every croaking voice that gushes out from unreliable sources, superficial myths spread and nest at the darkness of the minds.
One of the misconceptions in which the ink of wise pens had taken the gauntlet to defeat the wrong and bring back the authenticity at its pertinent place, is all what is seen at Muslims’ core homes about the month of Safar.
Bur first of all, let’s go into the lights which look over the month.
Safar is the second month of the Hijri calendar. And unlike what the people of Jahiliyah (who lived in that period of time before the Prophetic Mission’s inception.) thought about it ominously as a month that brings up bad luck, Islam came to demolish this myth.
While Islam started its blessed journey to purify the hearts of men, some of the heads of the prominent Arab tribes in the Arabian Peninsula had the habit of spreading superstitions among the common people to serve their own benefits… whether that was financial or political one… i.e. they used to change the order of the months.
Narrated Ibn Abbas –may Allah be pleased with him: The people (of the Pre-lslamic Period) used to think that to perform ‘Umra during the months of Hajj was one of the major sins on earth. And also used to consider the month of Safar as a forbidden (i.e. sacred) month and they used to say, “When the wounds of the camel’s back heal up (after they return from Hajj) and the signs of those wounds vanish and the month of Safar passes away then (at that time) ‘Umrah is permissible for the one who wishes to perform it.”
In the light of those strayed beliefs, the prophetic counteractive reprimand had solidly pulverized them to dust; he said (peace be upon him):
“No ‘adwaa, no tiyarah, no haamah, and no Safar. But flee from the leper as you would flee from a lion.” Agreed upon from a narration of Abu Huryrah-may Allah be pleased with him.
The prophet (peace be upon him) censured those acts and how the people of jahiliyah used to think of all that in the above mentioned hadith as having the superior power to change their fate. But the truth is none of them has that power but with Allah’s the All-Mighty Creed and Power.
Nor marriages or baby conceiving, neither health issues or deaths are related to the omens that were nested in the darkened souls.
Nor special prayers and du’aa are appointed at any day of the month of Safar, neither private or public charitable performances are authentically proven by the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them).
It is but the Will of the Allah the All-Mighty that has the power to change and re-change!
Also, all the battles that happened in the month of Safer, whether they were victorious or went as lessons for the Muslims, are never related at any shape or amount to the so called superstitious devilish power of the month itself. Nay! But all that is passive until Allah the All-Mighty orders to make it active.
But what saddened the hearts is that some of today’s Muslims do believe in such myths; and let that falsehood to entertain their decisions and future plans, which entirely had been rebuked by the plain prophetic sayings about the matter.
May Allah guide us all to His right path and show us the true retrogression path to Islam.
